Track Call Number Formats - Do you have them all?

A common issue with tracking UK mobile phone numbers arises because our mobile numbers can appear in various formats (0741..., +44741..., etc.). Call tracking software might see these as different numbers and create duplicate contact records.

The solution involves storing all possible formats for each number in your CRM

Phone Numbers and Multiple Formats

UK phone numbers, particularly mobile numbers, can be a little problematic to track because they can come to you in multiple formats. For example, when someone tells you their mobile number, they would normally say “0741xxxxxxx”. However, when they call, it could be received as “+44741XXXXXXX”. The pattern is different. So, if the only number in your CRM was the one commencing 07….. and their mobile provider sends this as +447…. then, your call tracking system will see this as an unknown number and possibly create a new and unknown contact record.

The solution is to update your record in the CRM with all possible formats the phone number could be:-

0741xxx-xxxx (National Format)
+44 741-xxx-xxxx (International Format)
+44741xxxxxxx (E.164 Format)
tel:+44-741xxx-xxxx (RFC 3699 Format)

To do this by hand would be a pain, leaving plenty of room for typing errors, not to mention a drain on time.

The Solution

The answer is to do it by automation. We use Make to supplement all our contact numbers in all possible formats and update their records in ActiveDEMAND and CRM.

As a new contact is created in ActiveDEMAND (Form completion, contact import, CRM update, or manually entered), the routine is triggered, the number is looked up, processed into multiple standard formats and then they are all passed back to the contact record in ActiveDEMAND. Job done.
